Catch Up With June

We’re up and running!

Hello and Welcome to Politics & the City, the team and I are so excited to be up and running, this site has been a real labor of love and we hope you’ll be pleased with the results. PATC fuses politics/news with entertainment, fashion and music, we understand how hard it is to keep abreast of what’s going on in the world, so hopefully we’ll be able to help you do just that.

Over the next few weeks we have blogs coming from an eclectic group of inspiring and interesting women including: Kylie and Danni Minogue, Kathy Lette, Shami Chakrabarti, Anna Friel, Jacqueline Gold, Baroness Amos, Theresa May MP and many more……

The first blog comes to us from British supermodel Lily Cole, being one of the most sought after models in the world Lily is forever on a plane and this time was no exception, she sent me her post via her Blackberry while about to take off from New York. She’s a great writer and a big music lover, her post is an informative yet humorous account of her week gig hopping.

We also have a new animation starting called Sally Dunn Accidental MP, it’s a sardonic tale of a butterfingered journalist who accidentally becomes MP for a tough London borough while trying to balance her ill-fated love life. It’s a funny light-hearted animated comedy I think you’ll enjoy.

Take a browse around the site familiarise yourself and we look forward to receiving any comments you may have.

Much Love,

Junexxxx

    Hey Junie,

So glad to know you are doing well. I spent a few years in the UK, left about 5 years ago for homeland in Africa. Last week in the middle of the night, I heard your wonderful voice covering the Mandela brithday concert for the BBC (Radio). I have always been a great fan of yours and I congratulate you for this wonderful initiative. If you can, also include african news from times to times, we even more than UK women, need to find creative ways of getting African girls and women interested in politics. Keep up the wonderful work, if you have an opportunity visit us in Africa. All the very best. You still look stunning.

    Hi,

I love the idea for the website and it is very polished. In terms of feedback though, firstly, the site runs very slowly. Maybe this si just teething problems though. Secondly the links at the top of the home page are a bit confusing. Are they part of this site? Taking me to an external site? I’ve had a look through them all and I’m still not sure what they all relate to. Can you make the links a bit more explicit? Eg. What does Glossy Wire mean?

Overall though, great idea, good website.

Phew! Finally somewhere to read about and discuss politics and be able to do so with authority whilst wearing lipgloss. Love, love, love the idea. Really pleased there’s an alternative to the usual pomposity and relived that there’s not a whiff of bad suits / bad hair / bad make up (no names mentioned, of course!). Great work by everyone involved.

    What a joke!

Julie Sarpong hosting a politics site and blog!?? What the goodness has this country come to?!

I mean we are talking about an ex T4 (Channel4) presenter talking about politics? Is it just me or are we seeing a plethora of presenters thinking that just because they are on TV, they can then go on and talk/discuss/debate about issues that they clearly have no background or specialism in?!?!

Possibly a good idea for a site, but not Julie Sarpong doing it….

What an utter and complete joke.

  62. Comment by Jen

This is truly the most preposterously patronising idea for a website I have ever heard of.

Women, who may also be interested in fashion and beauty etc etc, are perfectly capable of picking up a newspaper to read about current affairs, and guess what - we can multi-task so maybe we can simultaneously do our make up!

Thousands of young people male and female are not engaged in politics because they are disillusioned and don’t feel represented by politicians, not because news isn’t presented to them in a “fun” way. Anyone who wants to know about politics makes it their business to know, and those who don’t may well be foolish for feeling this way, but offering a rundown of Harriet Harmans most recent fashion blunders isn’t going to encourage them.

Do you think Boudica was worrying about the hottest animal print of the season as she drove the Romans out of Colchester?

As a woman who works for central Government and likes fashion, music and shiny things generally speaking, I find your website incredibly offensive.

    hi june

i found out about this website after watching the daily poltics show, the concept of trying to get more women involved and interested in poltics is great idea.

what exactly are the aims of this site, do you intend to publish the latest sound bites coming from the political partys, and invite honest and open debate, (much lacking from these days).

i must admit i was loath to leave a comment, from your interview on the DP, i felt this site was elitiste and not aimed at me, working class, poorley educated, but with a passion and knowledge of politics.

best of luck with your new site, but please make it accesable to all.

Congratulations! look forward to seeing what else you’ve got up your sleeve. Keep it up. the comments are quite interesting, personally I think anything that gets people who wouldn’t normally be interested, engaged in politics, is a good thing. As it means politicians have to be more responsive and take in to account the view of young people, women, working class people, non working people, minorities etc. If parliment is representing the country then it shouldn’t look and sound like a private members club

Great idea for a website. This will be the first blog I will subscribe to, and I’m really looking forward to reading more. Hope the site really takes off.

I’m so pleased this site has been set up…I’m always complaining that I don’t know enough about politics and that I find it hard to follow, but this site makes it really easy and interesting! Well done!

    Oh, how depressing,

The fact that so many women have posted here to espress their delight at a politics-based website that speaks to them….. just completely depressing.

June, as a woman who apparently has a desire to “speak” to us, didn’t it occur to you that we might be offended by the concept that we are incapable of picking up a decent paper, and need to have our politics translated so as to be digestible to those of us who (and I swear I saw this here) wear lipgloss?

And that’s not to mention the fact that this vast movement in womens’ imancipation is today heralding an interview with Jaqueline Gold. Words, truly, escape me.

This has been an insurmountably depressing 10 minutes. You have my email address, please do feel free to get in touch and tell me about your plans to speak with women in a less patronising manner, because I am completely despairing.
